DIY Tutorial: Make Your Own Ruched Bikini Bottom

Feeling cheeky this summer? Ruched bikini bottoms have been taking over this season because of their amazing ability to help fake that perky, bubble butt that we all covet. You’ve seen them in all the stores and swimwear catalogs. They’ve gotten so popular that wearing a ruched bikini bottom is now practically the standard norm at pool parties and events. Unfortunately, these type of bikini bottoms may flatter the booty, but they do not flatter our wallet. It seems like as bikini bottoms get smaller, the price gets higher.

Luckily, we have a solution to give your butt the extra ‘oomph’ that it deserves without breaking the bank to achieve it. This DIY Ruched Bikini Bottom tutorial is a quick and simple way to help give your booty that little lift. Trust us when we say wearing a ruched bikini bottom makes a huge difference. You’re not going to want to go back to regular bikini bottoms once you start scrunching, and you may even find yourself wanting to do the same to all your old and new bottoms. So what are you waiting for, grab a bikini bottom and let’s get started!

What you will need:

  • Bikini Bottom
  • Needle
  • Similar colored thread to your bikini (the stronger the better. You may want to use quilting thread, embroidery floss or fishing line. In this tutorial, we used quilting thread.)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

1. To make things easier, if your bikini bottom is a string bikini, untie it and lay it out flat so that the back section is exposed. If your bikini does not have strings, then flip it inside out.

2. Take your ruler and fold your bikini bottom in half so that you can get an idea of where the center is.

3. After you have gauged where the center of your bikini is, start lightly marking a straight line down the center with your pencil. Try to keep the line as straight and precise as possible.

4. Continue drawing your line until you hit the point where you want to stop the scrunching. Ruched bikini bottoms come in different styles and it’s up to you whether you want a small scrunch or a deep scrunch. If you want just a slight scrunch, then mark your line halfway down the bikini. And if you want a really deep scrunch, then mark your line all the way down.

5. Use a long piece of thread to thread your needle. Make sure to tie a couple of knots at the end of the thread to secure it. Start at the top of the bikini bottom underneath the tag, poke the needle through and pull it out from the other side. You may want to do this several times until you know that the top knot is secured.

6. Sew a running stitch, weaving the needle in and out, along the line you have marked. This will make it easier to sew in a straight line.

7. Try to keep the stitches as evenly spaced apart as possible. Line them apart according how tight you want the scrunching to be. The closer the spaces, the tighter the scrunches.

8. After you have reached the point of where you want your scrunching to end, before you tie your knot, begin pulling the thread slowly while holding down your bikini bottom. Your bikini bottom should start to scrunch with ease as you pull the thread upwards.

9. Sew or tie several knots at the point where you want your ruched bikini bottom to stop scrunching.

Ta-da! And now you have your own ruched bikini bottom that you can wear for tanning on the beach or partying it up at a day club! Will you be trying out this DIY tutorial for the summer?
